Fall Road Trip Ideas

Even though the temperatures may cause some confusion, it is officially fall here in South Carolina. School is back in session (YES!). Football season is here. Pumpkin Spice Latte’s are available again. And it’s the perfect time to plan quick weekend road trips here in the state of South Carolina.

Living in Columbia, South Carolina there are so many great locations we are able to visit within a few hours. While the summer is primarily for beach travel for our family –  fall is all about great sites to see the changing leaves, fairs and festivals.

Greenville, South Carolina

Approximately 100 miles from Columbia, Greenville is also known as Bikeville because of the large number of trails for recreational and avid bicycle riders. Main Street is, also, lined with local stores and restaurants – many with outdoor dining. Falls Park on the Reedy, located in downtown Greenville’s Historic West End, is one of Greenville’s greatest treasures. It is a beautiful public park clustered around a 50-foot waterfall that is best viewed from a sweeping pedestrian bridge.

Newberry, South Carolina

Less than an hour away from Columbia, Newberry is a quaint town that offers sites and attractions for almost anyone. My personal favorite is the Wells Japanese Garden – a Newberry landmark that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This is on our list of must-dos this fall. The Big Mo provides an authentic drive-in experience each Friday and Saturday evening and is less than an hour from Columbia, SC

Coastal Carolina Fair – Ladson, SC

This is a must for us each year as it’s the fair that I grew up attending every year with my family. Elephant ears are a must!
