6 Places to Visit in Milwaukee #VisitMKE #hosted
This summer I made it a point to spend quality time with one of my favorite Divas, Natasha of Houseful of Nicholes. We had a girlfriends’ getaway in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and had a fantastic time. One of the best parts about traveling is getting to experience the unique things that each city has to offer. Milwaukee is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan and has so many things to do! I talked about the yummy food we had while visiting and now I’d like to share some of the sights of the city. I have to say thank you to Visit Milwaukee for hosting us. They provided a great itinerary to help guide our visit!

Harambee Neighborhood
In the Harambee Neighborhood, you’ll mostly find older houses and small cottages. Hidden inside this neighborhood is a hot spot for African American culture that has been around since the 1930’s.
Fischberger’s Variety Store
Located in the Harambee Neighborhood, you won’t want to miss the chance to stop by Fischberger’s Variety Store.
This store is off the beaten path, but so worth the trip! This shop carries a few unusual items such as sarcastic mugs, books, remakes of old toys and candy, and so much more.
Victory Garden Initiative
Also in the Harambee neighborhood is the Victory Garden Initiative. I absolutely loved the time we spent at Victory Garden. It was great to see Natasha’s brain churning on where her own community garden would one day grow to be.
The Victory Garden Initiative has a vision that every single person and every home can connect to their food source by growing it. Victory Garden focuses on building communities that will grow their own food and create a sustainable nutritious food. While we were visiting, we got to see how the neighborhood children benefited from the garden and the lessons taught there.

Milwaukee Public Market
Milkwaukee’s Public Market is one of the best markets in the United States! Located downtown, this is one of the best places to visit for those who love great food. There is a huge selection of unique and high-quality foods sold from independent merchants. (Y’all know I had to find a way to mention the great food of Milwaukee again!)
Milwaukee Boat Line
The Milwaukee Boat Line is where you’ll want to go for a sightseeing tour! They also have happy hour cruises and concerts from time to time. Their sightseeing cruises will allow you to explore the harbors and rivers of Lake Michigan and see breathtaking views of Milwaukee. They have catering and meal packages available on select trips.
The cost is $19.88 for adults; $9.99 for children 4-12 and children 3 and under can ride for free. It is also dog-friendly. According to their website “well-behaved, leashed dogs that take care of “business” before boarding are welcome. Limit 10. First come, first served.” I would suggest purchasing your tickets in advance online, if possible.
We went on our tour on an overcast day but the sights were still breath-taking. The tour guides provided engaging history lessons about the area and there was time to just take in the beautiful sights around us.
North Point Light Station
The North Point Lighthouse sits at 74 feet and is a site you must see while you’re here! You can find this light station near Lake Park. There is also a museum that has artifacts from this famous lighthouse and its keepers.
The light house is open to the public and there is no need to make reservations for tours. The cost is $8 for 12 and older; $5 for adults 65+, students with identification and free for children age 4 and under. You do have to be at least 5 years old or and 38 inches tall to climb the tower.
Little known fact about me – I love light houses! I try to visit them as much as possible and find so much peace and serenity around these structures that were built to provide safety and a path to land to those traveling by sea. I also love reading and learning about the keepers of the lighthouses. Many who dedicate their lives to keeping watch through the night to ensure there’s always a light on for those searching for it.
Natasha is not so much a fan of anything involving heights, but I’m thankful for her for indulging me. She went all the way to the top with me, y’all!
North Point is literally in a neighborhood. I love that it’s being preserved and providing history and lessons. My favorite fact from North Point? That the longest serving lighthouse keeper was a Diva!
I truly enjoyed my time in Milwaukee and look forward to visiting again. The city is beautiful and there were many places we still had on our list to visit when it was time to leave.
