Use What You Know: A Business Idea Guide for Moms by Joyce Brewer

I was very excited to review the e-book Use What You Know: A Business Idea Guide for Moms by Emmy Award Winning Joyce Brewer for various reasons:
~one of my long-term goals is to work for myself
~I currently have business ideas in mind and any help with implementing them is appreciated
~ I believe in using the knowledge and practices of those that are where I’d like to be to get to learn how to get there myself
The book gives you information and insight on using the skills and knowledge you currently have and making them work and be profitable for you. I appreciated that it included interviews and insight from women who’d gone from working for others to being their own boss.  The resounding theme among them all was wanting to spend more time at home with their families and being in control of their work schedules.  I liked the acknowledgement that just because you work from home you’re not working less or easier.
The Business Idea Guide for Moms is truly a resource guide for those interested in starting their own business.  The thought-provoking worksheets at the end help with formulating your business plans and aligning what you have to offer with what you need to put your plans into action.  It includes:
  • 40+ business ideas moms can start with little or no start up money.
  • in-depth interviews w/ successful mompreneurs with step-by-step advice on how they turned their ideas into a business.
  • informative videos.
  • links to free & low-cost business resources.
The moms spotlighted in this book all have degrees and worked in the corporate world until they decided they were ready for a change.  They put their education and work experience to use for them and their families.  I believe that even those without a degree can and will gain insight and knowledge from the Business Idea Guide for Moms.
I had a chance to ask the author, Joyce Brewer, a few questions and appreciate her taking the time share her time and knowledge with the Divas With A Purpose community:

This year Divas With A Purpose is focusing on inspiring and motivating women to embrace their DIVATUDE in their daily walk (being driven, inspiring, victorious and called-to-action). Your book definitely falls in line with that – especially with women looking to step out as entrepreneurs in the very near future. When you hear DIVATUDE what immediately comes to mind?

Empowered women who are confident and bold.
I love surrounding myself by women who have those characteristics.
I love that Use What You Know included interviews and insight from women within your networking circle in Atlanta, GA. What suggestions would you give to women who are having a difficult time finding networking opportunities in their cities?

Make your own opportunities. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Some of the best networking opportunities are small and just include women talking over coffee. Take your sales hat off and stop pushing what you do and just talk.
You have to build a relationship. It’s very rare that you meet someone who buys from you on the spot.
Each of the women interviewed in your book shared a common concern in their quest to becoming mompreneurs – spending more quality time with their children. Did you have an “ah-ha” moment when you made the transition that let you know you’d made the right decision?

Yes, when I asked my son (who’s about to turn 3) if he wanted Mommy to go to work or stay with home. “Stay home Mommy!” was his response.
This isn’t shared to make moms who work outside the home feed badly about their decision. Everyone has to do what’s right for their family. I’ve traveled out of town and taken multiple assignments that included juggling his needs around my husband’s schedule.
What I appreciate the most about Joyce and the ladies in her book is that they recognize and respect that not everyone desires to be a mompreneur. There are tons of women that are happy and thriving in the working world.  For those that do have an entrepreneurial spirit, her book gives lots of insight straight from those that have successfully made the transition.
