The Importance of Self-Care
I am in serious pain as I write this article on the importance of self-care.
And I have no one to blame but myself.
I have to come clean. All the advice and admonishments to put yourself first, take care of your total wellness, routine check-ups – I have failed myself miserably.
Because of fear.
I am TERRIFED of the dentist. When I go in, even for a routine cleaning, I begin to hyperventilate. I had a horrific experience years ago when I lived in Texas and it has stuck with me decades later.
Which means I have put off a visit for way too long. I’m embarrassed to even say how long it has been and now I’m forced to go. I know it’s going to be bad. Which, of course, does not help my anxiety at all.
But besides the pain that kept me up almost all night long. It was the look of concern on my children’s face this morning when I couldn’t even attempt to hide the pain I was feeling.
My youngest son’s first words were “Momma, you need to see the doctor. He’ll make you feel all better. That’s his job.”
Out of the mouths of babes, right.

So, I sucked it up and made an appointment. While I can’t be seen today, the nurse I spoke with was extremely helpful (and I’m sure they get calls like this on a regular basis) and gave me some home remedies to help soothe the pain and calm my nerves. For that I’m thankful. There was no judgement or hypocrisy in her voice. She respected my fear and attempted to alleviate it the best she could. Yeah, I cried a little. Okay, maybe lots when I hung up.
Self-care is necessary and needed. Not just to taking time out for yourself, but making sure you are taking care of your body inside and out. While as a wife and mother, this is super important. I am, also, now in the role as a full-time entrepreneur. When I’m down, so is my business. I can’t give my best to the different roles I have if I do not take the best care of myself first.
