Guest Post: The Year I Had To Re-Learn Self-Love

As women it is challenging to remember ourselves. We do everything for everyone else without regret. We are Mothers, Daughters, Wives, Girlfriends, Sisters, Friends, Significant Others, Miracle Makers who naturally take care of everything – which is great because that is what we are supposed to do, right? The challenge comes in when we do not take time for ourselves on regular basis. Sure, we do some for ourselves every now and then – but that is really not enough. We deserve more!

The Year I Had To Re-Learn Self Love by Kimberly of Keystrokes by Kimberly #LovingMyselfFirst

I realized this in 2007 when I had my first stroke. As I laid on my back so many thoughts ran through my mind. Questions like: How can I improve my quality of life? What did I do so wrong to deserve this? When was my last family vacation? When was my last solo vacation? When is the last time I stopped to take care of me?!? My answers were the same for each of my questions. What was that? It was a blank memory because I could not recall an answer for any of it. It was not my memory –  it was my life choices because I had taken care of everyone but me. I had forgotten to take care of me and that was the saddest thing about the stroke. I had forgotten to take care of me. I had to learn self-love all over again!

So fast forward a few years. I now take care of me on a regular basis and shoestring budget! Why on a shoestring budget? Well, simply stated, my quality of life drastically changed on March 11, 2007. I no longer had a disposable income to pamper myself and this is when I need it the most. Not just for added physical comfort but a medical priority to get bi-weekly massages, take a mini trip every quarter and to meditate daily for at least an hour. These three things allow me to take care of me to the best of my ability. I am watering my own garden, blooming where I have been planted and loving it. I love myself…
