Gratitude Journal

Do you or have you ever kept a gratitude journal? It’s a simple way to reflect on the things you are thankful for within your life.

I try to write down at least five things each day that I’m thankful for. Some days are easier than others, but taking the time to stop and reflect on my day and what I have (versus what I don’t) makes a huge difference.  On the days that I’m too busy or tired, I can feel the difference in my attitude and overall demeanor.

  • Choose a journal that works for you – a formal journal might work best or a Word file on your computer. You could even utilize the Notes section of your smart phone or download a virtual journal.
  • Be specific with what you’re thankful for. Rather than “I’m thankful for my family” focus on the why for that particular day – “I’m thankful that my children made it through dinner time without arguing”

  • List 3-5 items. Decide on a goal that will work best for you and try to be as consistent as possible. This is a great habit to form and will do wonders for your demeanor and outlook on your daily life.
  • Set a gratitude alarm or reminder. A specific time each day to stop what you’re doing and write in your gratitude journal.
  • Look at ways to turn not-so-good events into positives for you. Find ways to be grateful during the storms of life, the disappointments and the dark moments that come.
