What’s On Our Family Reading List?
One of my greatest joys is seeing the excitement of my children experiencing something fun and amazing with my children. As of late, I have been able to re-experience childhood favorites with them and share my memories and love for certain things with them.
Going to the movies together is something we had gotten out of doing over the years. While my daughter was younger, it was easier for me to stay home with her while my husband took our boys. I’d listen patiently as they re-enacted their favorite scenes and then wait for it to be released to DVD so I could enjoy the moments they shared first-hand.
This summer I decided it was time to reclaim my movie time and started attending the special Dollar Day screenings our local theatre participated in. My daughter was hooked! She loved finding the perfect seat and insisted we stayed until the final credits rolled and the lights came on. Watching her animatedly discuss her favorite scenes and sing her favorite songs throughout the week was awesome!
What better way to build our family library and decide upon our family reading projects than to combine it with another family past time!

A Wrinkle In Time
As soon as I saw the trailer for A Wrinkle In Time, I knew it was time introduce my children to this classic. We’ve been reading the novel as our first family reading project and my kids absolutely love it! When I told them I’d first read this book when I was in grade school, they “oohed and awed” over how old the book was. I chose not to hold that comment against them for good of us all. I cannot wait for us to see this movie this weekend as we celebrate my youngest son’s 10th birthday.

Christopher Robin
After seeing this preview, I knew what was next on our reading list. I have to introduce my children to the Christopher Robin, Winnie-the-Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore and the magic of Hundred Acre Wood! They know of Pooh from stuffed animals and modern-day cartoons, but the original is definitely the best.
In the heartwarming live action adventure, the young boy who embarked on countless adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood with his band of spirited and lovable stuffed animals, has grown up and lost his way. Now it is up to his childhood friends to venture into our world and help Christopher Robin remember the loving and playful boy who is still inside.
Christopher Robin will be in theatres this summer on August 3, 2018.
Mary Poppins Returns
I honestly squealed in delight when I saw this! It’s been eons since I watched Mary Poppins and I now I have to have the original movie to share with my children. I already know that my daughter will be singing and dancing along to it! We’ll, also, be reading Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Comes Back, and Mary Poppins Opens the Door throughout the year as Mary Poppins Returns doesn’t come out until Christmas.
In the sequel, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives.
Mary Poppins Returns cast includes:
- Emily Blunt as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure
- Lin-Manuel Miranda as her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London
- Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks
- Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks
- Julie Walters as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen
- Colin Firth as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins
- Meryl Streep as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy
The film also introduces three new Banks’ children played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson. Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the PL Travers books and Dick Van Dyke is Mr. Dawes Jr., the retired chairman of the bank now run by Firth’s character.
