International Women’s Day and what it means to me

Happy Day of YOU, Divas!!!

Yep, you read that right. For those that don’t know, March 8th is designated as International Women’s Day. Depending on where you are located, the day may have a different significance in your region.  Some designate it as a way to celebrate, honor and show respect to women and the role they play in their families and community.  For some it’s a time to the economic, political and social achievements of women.  And for others, the original intent plays a large role – the struggles of women worldwide are examined politically and socially in a hopeful manner to bring about conversation, awareness and, more importantly, change.

International Women's Day 2013This year’s theme “A Promise is a Promise: Time for Action to End Violence Against Women” really resonated with me.

Yesterday, President Obama signed a renewal of the Violence Against Women Act that helps provide many programs and services that impact our local communities such as:

  • Legal aid for domestic violence survivors
  • Funding for victim assistance services to include rape crisis centers and hotlines
  • Community violence prevention programs

Recent work and interactions with women in my community that are survivors of domestic violence have really opened my eyes and heart to the importance of having the proper services available to those that truly need it.

International focus on the struggles of girls’ and the trafficking of women and children show that across the board there’s still much work to do and collectively we CAN make a difference.

Today we celebrate the wonderfulness of women.

Reach out to mentor and guide someone in your area of expertise so that we can build a network of women who are empowered and inspired. Be open and receptive to receiving assistance and encouragement.

We fully embrace our divatude and should re-commit to motivating and uplifting one another.

How are you commemorating International Women’s Day?
What are ways we can recognize the importance of the women in our lives on a regular basis?
